Tile & Flooring Surface Calculator

There is a specific kind of heartbreak known only to those who reach the final corner of a bathroom renovation only to realize they are exactly one tile short. Our Tile Calculator is designed to prevent that 4:00 PM Sunday run to the hardware store. By converting room dimensions in feet to tile dimensions in inches—and factoring in the essential "waste margin"—this tool ensures your project is backed by mathematical certainty.

The Math of Mixed Units

Standard room measurements are almost always taken in feet, while individual tiles are sold in inches (e.g., the classic 12"x12" or the modern 6"x24" plank). To find the correct number of tiles, the calculator first determines the total square footage of your floor and then divides it by the square inch area of a single tile.

// The Flooring Logic

1. Room Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

2. Tile Area (sq ft) = (Length (in) × Width (in)) / 144

3. Total Tiles = (Room Area / Tile Area) + Waste %

Choosing Your Waste Percentage

Adding a waste margin isn't just about accounting for tiles you might accidentally break with a heavy-handed hammer blow. It’s about the cuts. Unless your room dimensions are a perfect multiple of your tile size, you will have off-cuts that cannot be used elsewhere.

5%Simple Grid
10%Standard/Offset
15%Herringbone
20%Complex/Diagonal

Pro-Tip: If you are a first-time tiler, always lean toward 15%. It is much cheaper to have three extra tiles in the garage than to pay for shipping on a single box later.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Measure the Room

Enter the length and width of your floor in feet. If your room is L-shaped, calculate it as two separate rectangles and add the results together.

2

Check Your Box

Enter the dimensions of the tile you've chosen in inches. Common sizes include 12x12, 12x24, and 24x24.

3

Select Waste Multiplier

Choose your waste percentage based on the complexity of your layout pattern. The tool will automatically round up to the nearest whole tile.
